Luis Maurette

Luis Maurette is an Argentinian-born electronic musician, sound and multimedia artist currently living between Buenos Aires, New York and Oakland. A nomad since childhood, Luis' artistic vision is born out of his many homes throughout North and South America; the natural world, and the different indigenous people who have inhabited these places across the continent. He received a BA in both Music Production and Engineering and Music Synthesis from Berklee College of Music and attended the French institute CCMIX in Paris to study electronic music. He more recently completed an MFA in Electronic Music and the Recording Media from Mills College in Oakland, California. He has performed and released music, among other places, in USA, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, France, Sweden, Spain, Italy and Brazil. He is also co-founder of the environmentally conscious NY-based art non-profit artist organization Eidolon Culture and Production Manager for the San Francisco based nonprofit, Nexmap. His work delves into several worlds, including improvisation, production, electro-acoustic composition, video, art/sound installation and multimedia performances. Among his numerous collaborators are Alejandra Ortiz, Luciana Sanz [aka lu(x)z], June Watanabe, Ben Bracken, Gregg Kowalsky, Rhea Volij and Joo Won Park. His music is a continuous exploration of nature, ancestry, culture and spirit, a practice that is in constant growth and is directly influenced by the indigenous essence that is universal to all human origin.

Gregg Kowalsky

Gregg Kowalsky resides in Oakland, California where he completed a Master of Fine Arts degree in Electronic Music and Recording Media at Mills College. Kowalsky’s compositions range from drone and noise pieces to meditative psychedelia. After his debut album, Through the Cardial Window (Kranky), Gregg started working with cassette tapes, sine oscillators, mixer feedback, contact mics, etc…

His recent series of Tape Chants explores the acoustics where the performances occur by setting up cassette players around the space, using only the cassette players’ speakers for amplification. Throughout the piece, Gregg moves around the space adjusting the amplitude of the players as a live mix. The first incarnation of Tape Chants was released in 2007 titled Tape Chants A Million (Rootstrata).

Kowalsky has had the opportunity to perform throughout Europe and the United States; participating in festivals such as WDR’s SoundArt-Köln Festival, Sonar, ERTZ Festival and the Ideal Festival among others. His recordings have released on Kranky, Rootstrata, Arbor and Important Records. He has composed for dance, sound installations, film and acoustic ensembles.

Gregg is currently working on several projects that will see the light of day in 2010. Arbor will be releasing a cassette of Early Experiments, which were recorded prior to Tape Chants. Giuseppe Ielasi has a new label, which will release an LP of new material. Date Palms is the collaboration between Gregg and Marielle Jakobsons, which are finishing up their first album Of Psalms.
